Living through Mars’ Transit of Libra

A shorter version of this was published in Maui Vision in early February.

It is an obviously apparent statement: we’re living in a unique time. This uniqueness is augmented by the planet Mars spending a very long time in one sign. On average, it zips through a sign in six weeks. Mars entered Libra in November 2013 and will continue there until July 25, 2014.

Astrological review – Mars is an activator, it is our get-up-and-go, fight/flight/freeze reactions. It describes, by its location in our natal chart, how we give in relationships including how we care for ourselves. This is the planet of conflict and war. Libra – the Cardinal air sign – represents the place of relationships and finearts in the zodiac. Symbolized by the balancing scales, justice is part of this mind-driven sign. Some conclusions for this time are: beginning new creativeprojects; divisiveness in relationships because needs are not being met; joining and taking action on social justice projects which are highly personal; attending to beautification projects around home and work areas.

Mars in Libra can make life difficult for these three signs; Aries, Cancer and Capricorn. Perhaps people are poking these native sun signs in unkind ways. Aries people may find themselves confronted by directly opposing viewpoints and other obstacles. Review your motivations as well as those presented by these challenges to your actions. Also, we have several major planets in Aries and Capricorn, which as Mars’ makes a passing connection to them, tension is built and released to create new forms. If you can, let go and trust the Divine process. Be available to others, if you have the emotional resilience and resources, but keep boundaries.

Librans can be on alert for feeling poked by Mars into a new level of productivity, action and perhaps engendering some conflict in relationships. Be self-aware regarding any and all emotional and physical trigger points.

The fire signs of Leo and Sagittarius along with the air signs of Gemini and Aquarius may find harmonious activations from Mars being in Libra.

These earth and water signs – Taurus, Virgo and Scorpio, Pisces – may have disharmonious issues and feelings brought about by this transit.

How does a retrograde motion appear in the sky? The photograph posted here is what retrograde Mars looked like in the sky during a retrograde period a few years ago. Enjoy the work of Tunc Tezel, made in 2012. He took a photograph every 5 to 8 days.

The disharmony may be the greatest during the retrograde period of Mars in Libra. This time is from 1 March until 19 May. Anyone with planets between the degrees of 9 and 27 in their natal chart may feel greater stress during these months.
